Samenvatting
Summary
When Lyra and her dæmon Pantalaimon, or, Pan, first hear about Dust, they deside to go and find out everything they can about it. She and her friend Roger are running up and down the Jordan College, having fun and playing games, until her mother, Ms Coulter arrives and says she should come whit her. And so lyra’s adventure begins. Before she leaves, the headmaster of the school gives her a gift. It’s an Alethiometer, if you know how to use one, it can give you every single answer you want, like: ‘Is Roger still alive?’ or ‘Will we get out of here?’ and many other question. There are only three known Alethiometers, and now Lyra has one in her possesion.
When she arrives at Ms. Coulters residance, she get’s her own room, and everything a girl can wish for. Any other girl, that is. But Lyra only wants her freedom back, and Roger. So she runs away, especially after finding out al her mother wanted was to use her to get the Alethiometer.
She gets caught by some thieves, and gets rescued again by the gypsies.
She goes to the North whit them and finds out that her friend Roger is been held captive by the people Ms. Coulter works for, the Church. The Church wants to know everything about dust, so that they can destroy it. Lyra goes to rescue her friend, and by doing so, gets herself up into a lot of trouble. She meets a bear, Iorek Byrnison, and they become friends. The bears are commonly known for their good work whit practicly every metal substance in the entire world, and some say even beyond. And of course, that automatically says, good fighters.
He helps her get into the house were her friend is, and there she stays for a while. It appears to be much like an orphenage, cafateria, sleeping dorms, classrooms, playground, everything. She finds back Roger, and together they go looking for a way out. They find a room, where there are cages filled whit dæmons, which gives them both a shock, seeing no people in sight, and knowing that, no dæmon, ór human for that matter, can be more that 4 meter aay from each other, whitout dying. So they go looking, and find that the children are being used to de reaserch on Dust.
It appears that children have more Dust, that grownups have, which can be related to the fact that, children dæmons can change their shape into every creature they want, but a grownups dæmon settled into one shape, like Ms. Coulters dæmon is a monkey, and Lord Asriel, her father and the leader of the reaserch team, has a snowcat. As they are looking, it appears that the reason why children are disappearing from the place, is that they cut away their dæmons, to see what happens.
As Lyra and Will escape from that place, they set al the dæmons and kids free, and blow the place apart.
They get rescued by the witches and their queen, Serafina Pekkala. They also become friends whit Lee Scoresby, an aereonaut.
They find out that the banished Iorek is actually the true king of the Armoured Bears of the North, and help him regain his true throne.
Then Lord Asriel kidnaps Roger to use him for his experiments. In those experiments Roger falls of a cliff, his dæmon being held at the top, so when he falls, their bond snaps and they both die.
This unleashes an energy wave, which Lord Asriel uses to open a gate between their universe and another. He walk trough, and so do Lyra and Pantalaimon, because they want to stop him, because they found out Dust must not be destroyd, because humans and dæmons need it to live, and so do the plants, and the trees, and everything else.
Time:
- The story is set round about the year 2000/2050 (somewere in between)
- The story takes about a year.
- There are no flashbacks.
Place:
- The story mainly takes place in the world of Lyra.
- The surroundings are very good discribed.
Characters:
The main Characters are:
- Lyra Belacqua, a girl who lives among the scholars of Jordan College, whit her dæmon familiar Pantalaimon. She is 12 years old ans has shoulder length, wild, brownie hair, blue eyes and a very stubborn character. She alway wants to know everything that goes around in her surroundings. Her best friend Roger and she always wander around Jordan college, up to misschief.
- Will Parry a boy who comes from our world, not from the strange dæmon-world were Lyra comes from. He lives in London, whit his mother, until someday there are man who come into his house to try and take him away. He is 12 years old whit long blond hair falling in front of his eyes, which are blue/grey. He runs away from home and finds a portal to the haunted world of Cittàgazze, were he meets Lyra.
Kind of story:
- It’s a fantasy story, combined whit romance, traveling, war and adventure.
- It’s for boys, girls and adults, simply because everybody would like this book.
- It can’t happen for real, because it’s mostly fantasy. Mabey it can be real though, because you never know, mabey there are paralel universes.
